Explore our round-up of the most romantic ski resorts and ski towns in North America.

Stowe Mountain Resort in Vermont has been one of the most romantic resorts in the world since its beginning almost 90 years ago. All it takes is an evening stroll down Main Street in Stowe Village for that glow to begin. The village is quaint and cozy, while Mountain Road is loaded with lodging options and restaurants that will soothe and delight just like the après-ski drinks you’ll likely find along the way. Go ice skating at Spruce Peak with Mt. Mansfield as your backdrop or skate inside at the Stowe Arena in the village. Cuddle under a blanket for a sleigh ride through the woods.

Take the short ride to Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory (yes, even in winter) or indulge in some samples at Champlain Chocolates. Head to the world-famous Stowe Front Four on Mt. Mansfield for some iconic New England black-diamond runs or go easy with some relaxed skiing on Spruce Peak. Look no further than the Trapp Family Lodge (yes, the Von Trapps of The Sound of Music) for a romantic stay. Take a sleigh ride, book a couples massage, or get active by enjoying their gorgeous cross-country skiing terrain. Alternatively, The Lodge at Spruce Peak is Stowe’s only slopeside ski-in, ski-out hotel.

Sugarbush Resort, located 30 miles south of Stowe, was known as Mascara Mountain in the bygone years when the handsome Norwegian Olympian Stein Ericksen called it home. Skiing Sugarbush means two mountains — Lincoln Peak and Mount Ellen — each with its own feel and beautiful Vermont views. For luxury and romance, it doesn’t get much better than the Pitcher Inn in Warren, just off the mountain. The Pitcher Inn is a Relais & Châteaux luxury inn offering a couple of spacious two-bedroom suites and nine unique guest rooms. The Dining Room is casual, but elegant, while large windows frame the view to the back garden and babbling brook. The next day, give throwback Mad River Glen a whirl. As they say, “Ski it if you can.” If you’re a snowboarding couple, however, just remember that Mad River Glen doesn’t permit snowboards.

Jackson in next door New Hampshire is made for couples with its Honeymoon Bridge built in 1876 for cross-country skiers. Jackson is home to four nearby ski areas — Attitash, Black Mountain, Wildcat and Cranmore  — all less than 20 minutes from the majestic Eagle Mountain House, which sits high on the hill above town. The Eagle Mountain House harkens back to the late-1800s, so you’ll be going more old school here. Check out the Romance Package, which features overnight accommodations, chocolate-covered strawberries, a bottle of sparkling wine in your room upon arrival, and a daily breakfast in Highfields Restaurant.

If you are an intermediate or beginner skier or boarder, there’s no better place than Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. The beautifully groomed slopes are mellow with gorgeous scenery of Mt. Washington. Retire to the world-famous Omni Mount Washington Resort when the lifts stop cranking. Check out any number of the hotel’s restaurants and bars for après-ski, toasting to love over cocktails, or get a couples massage in the Presidential Spa. Then dance the night away in the Prohibition-era Cave.

Voted by TripAdvisor as one of the most romantic locations in small town America, Snowshoe Mountain Resort in West Virginia offers couples a little bit of everything. Ski down from the summit on interesting, varied terrain, or go for a slower pace by booking a couple’s day at the spa. Dine at one of Snowshoe’s specialty restaurants like Appalachian Kitchen or South Mountain Grille, and then cap the night off with dessert and champagne.

Telluride, in Southwest Colorado, fits the bill for couples immediately upon arriving. Telluride’s mountain resort boasts some of Colorado’s most breathtaking views, along with several great on-mountain restaurants that make it the perfect place to clink celebratory glasses to one another. Alpino Vino is a wonderfully romantic small on-mountain dining hütte, where couples can cozy up with sheepskin blankets and experience an exceptional international wine list, with mountain views to match. At 11,966 feet, Alpino Vino is one of the highest elevation restaurants in North America.

Ski in and out from any number of Telluride ski-in, ski-out accommodations during the day and travel via custom-built snowcoach at night. We pick the Dunton Town House on Oak Street, steps from the gondola. The Dunton Town House has been thoughtfully decorated using a mix of custom furnishings, Tyrolean antiques, imported fabric from Tyrol, and Austrian ceramics.

Aspen has long been considered one of the most romantic ski getaways. Couples who want it all on their ski vacation will find it here. Ski by day at one of the four mountains at Aspen Snowmass and dine by night at one of its world-class restaurants. We think romance is a given if you stay at the The Little Nell, St. Regis, or Hotel Jerome, all of which we named among Aspen’s top hotels. Couples will enjoy cozying up at the Ullr Nights bonfire or dancing the night away in the Elk Camp lodge at Snowmass.

The romance continues in Colorado, where couples can glide around the Beaver Creek ice rink hand in hand at Vail’s luxurious sister resort above Avon, Colorado. For a unique intimate dinner, look no further than Beano’s Cabin, reached via a snowcat-drawn sleigh ride to access the high-alpine restaurant. Beaver Creek’s self-contained village is ideal for the couple looking to have a self-contained romantic vacation. Here, the village features numerous superb dining experiences, like Spago at The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch. Be sure to strap on the cross-country skis high above the village at McCoy Park, one of the most stunning cross-country terrains you’ll find. If you’ve never gone cross-country skiing, it’s a fun lesson to do together, and will make you feel like you’ve earned those après-ski drinks.

For at least one day each year, on Valentine’s Day, Loveland, Colorado is the undisputed “Love Capital of the World.” Loveland has been conducting their annual Marry Me & Ski for Free Valentine’s Day Mountaintop Matrimony Ceremony and Reception for decades each Valentine’s Day. New couples are joined in matrimony while married couples can renew their vows here. The mass wedding takes place at noon sharp in Forest Meadow in a small valley between Catwalk Trees and the Chairlift Six terrain, where the snow in the Forest Meadow area is generally light and fluffy. The Honeymooner’s Après Party for all participants and their guests follows the ceremony at 1:30 p.m. at the Loveland Basin featuring music, wedding cupcakes, and sparkling apple cider. Reserve your rooms early.

Next we head to New Mexico. While skiing or snowboarding are certainly at the top of your to-do list at Taos Ski Valley, the venerable resort has so much more to offer. After a day of skiing or riding in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, relax at the Spa and Wellness Center for a couples massage, facials, and more. Finish your day with an intimate dinner at 192 at the Blake – an intimate setting with a blend of European and New Mexican decor and cuisine. If you’re traveling north on a sunny , snow-free day, consider taking a longer drive from Albuquerque via the scenic High Road to Taos. This 56-mile stretch winds through desert, mountains, and forests. »View Telluride Romantic Lodging Options

Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah is known far and wide for its impeccable service and incredible ski experience. The views are extraordinary, the food and drinks are top shelf, and the famed Utah powder has earned “The Greatest Snow on Earth” name. The mid-mountain Stein Eriksen Lodge is considered one of the best ski lodges in America, and was voted America’s “Best Ski Hotel 2023” by the World Ski Awards. The historic silver mining town of Park City is right down the road with a plethora of authentic bars, shops, and dining. For a celebratory dinner, head to Riverhorse On Main or Fletcher’s. If you’re making it a long weekend, then take a day or two to ski Park City Mountain Resort across town.

In California, it doesn’t get much more romantic than Lake Tahoe, and especially at Northstar California, where The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, located mid-mountain, welcomes guests in style. Ski-in and ski-out luxury accommodations await guests after a day on Northstar’s slopes. Couples can treat themselves at the 17,000-square-foot slopeside spa, and then enjoy a romantic dinner at Manzanita. Access to The Village at Northstar is via the complimentary inter-mountain gondola. Rent a pair of skates to take a few laps around The Village ice skating rink, but make sure you make time late in the afternoon to find a good fire pit spot for the 4 p.m. complimentary s’mores.

Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood, Oregon takes ski vacation romance a step or two further with wedding packages designed for small gatherings. Fireside or mountainside weddings (and just plain romantic dreams) come true at Timberline. After a day of skiing, try to grab a window seat early at Ram’s Head Bar, where if you’re lucky on a clear day, you can enjoy a stunning view of Mt. Hood. Afterward, enjoy drinks by the massive stone fireplace.

Canada

Quebec City exudes romance, or as they say there, it’s trés romantique. Quebec City is like being in France without the transatlantic flight. Travelers can fly into Quebec City, or for New Englanders, it’s a six-hour drive from Boston. We suggest staying at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac in the heart of the historic city. Skiing is just a half-hour away at Mont St. Anne and an hour away at Le Massif. Both these Canadian ski resorts have acres and acres of skiable terrain, and wonderful views of the St Lawrence Seaway. Need some extra romantic adrenaline? Ride the Luge at Le Massif, but hold on to your lunch. »View more romantic lodging options at Mont St. Anne

The romantic European feel continues in the lovely ski village of Tremblant, located just 90-minutes north of Montreal, and which exudes the charm and beauty that reminds you of the Alps. Mont-Tremblant has cobblestone streets lined with buildings that mimic Montreal’s Old City, but with vibrant red, teal, and marigold facades and roofs. The pedestrian village lies at the foot of the highest mountain of the Laurentians and offers excellent Eastern Canada skiing. Tremblant has a distinctive joie de vivre attitude with skiing off all four sides of its Laurentian Mountains ski resort. Stay at Le Westin Tremblant in the village, located a short walk from the slopes, and headlined by a full-service spa and Tiguidou Restaurant by Oliver & Bonacini. »View romantic lodging options at Tremblant.

When you first visit Banff Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada, you’ll be in awe of nearby Banff National Park’s pristine beauty. Banff Lake Louise ski resorts, known as SkiBig3, are perfect for a couple with differing levels of skiing or snowboarding ability. Sunshine Village is ideal for beginners and intermediates, while advanced intermediates will likely prefer Mt. Norquay. Advanced and expert skiers and riders can get their adrenaline kicks at Lake Louise. The world famous Banff Springs hotel stands as Banff’s, “Castle in the Rockies,” and has been stoking romance to guests for more than 130 years. »Find more romantic lodging options in Banff.

As the largest ski resort in North America, Whistler Blackcomb is the one-stop shop for couples who want the luxury of not needing a car. Transfer services operate between Vancouver and Whistler, so that once you arrive in Whistler Village, you’re set. Whistler has so many romantic accommodations, but it doesn’t get much more romantic than a chateau, which is what you’ll find at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, located just steps from the slopes. Enjoy a lavish spa treatment at Vida Spa, and then celebrate at any one of the Fairmont’s restaurants, like The Wildflower or The Grill Room.

We’ll end at the not-as-well-known ski resort of Panorama in British Columbia, which is a quaint alternative to British Columbia’s larger ski resorts. The skiing and facilities are extensive and crowds are non-existent. It has nearly 3,000 acres of varied terrain from long, wide groomers to steeps and chutes in the back bowls, gladed tree skiing, and special areas for first-timers. Check out the custom-built Earl Grey Lodge, located in the village. It was voted the no. 1 Best Small Hotel in Canada in 2021 by TripAdvisor users. »See more lodging options at Panorama resort.

Aspen Snowmass is a world-class ski resort in Colorado that’s on just about every skier and snowboarder’s bucket list. You’ll ski or ride on four mountains, all of which are unique, fun and challenging. Aspen Mountain (or Ajax to locals), Aspen Highlands with its legendary Highlands Bowl, Snowmass with its wide open groomers, and Buttermilk, which is perfect for beginners and intermediates. Beyond the slopes, however, Aspen is dotted with some of the most luxurious hotels that you’ll ever find in a ski town. It, plus the incredible food scene, and culture, are among Aspen’s showstoppers. Below, we breakdown the best resort hotels in Aspen.

Best resorts in Aspen

Hotel Jerome

Hotel Jerome, an iconic part of the Aspen landscape since 1889 at the height of the town’s silver boom, is actually the only Aspen hotel to have survived the silver crash. Long before Aspen became a ski town, Hotel Jerome saw cowboys ride through its front doors and 10th Mountain Division soldiers at the bar after a day of training. You’ll find a mix of authentic upscale Western decor, along with contemporary luxuries, from a boutique spa to an outdoor pool and hot tubs to beautifully-outfitted suites. Dine in the Living Room and famous J-Bar, and enjoy dinner at Prospect. Other highlights include pick-up and drop-off at Aspen Airport, complimentary transportation into town, and a complimentary shuttle to all four ski mountains.

Many magazines, including Conde-Nast Traveler, have ranked the Hotel Jerome as one of the top hotels in America, and so while it may not have the name recognition as some of Aspen’s other famous hotels, it’s not to be missed.

The Little Nell

The Little Nell, at the base of Aspen Mountain, is Aspen’s only five-star, five-diamond ski-in, ski-out hotel. This is the epitome of luxury, with amenities that include a health center with men’s and women’s locker rooms (each with steam and massage rooms), an outdoor heated pool and hot tub surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, complimentary mini bar, complimentary shuttle, ski concierge services, and even babysitting services for a fee. The Little Nell is so convenient, too, just steps form the Silver Queen Gondola.

All rooms have a unique floor plan, and gas log fireplaces, while most have a private balcony with views that may include Aspen Mountain, the Continental Divide, Durant and Spring Streets, the courtyard, and the pool. The Little Nell has two restaurants and three bars. What’s more, The Little Nell is dog-friendly and warmly welcomes your four-legged bestie.

Debuting in the winter of 2023 is a renovated spa, which will feature three treatment suites, each with their own private changing rooms with a steam shower, and two of which will have fireplaces and hybrid infrared/halotherapy saunas. The new state-of-the-art fitness center will feature Woodway treadmills, Peoloton cycles, Technogym machinery, and a TRX training station.

St. Regis Aspen Resort

The St. Regis Aspen Resort exudes elegance in downtown Aspen. Aspen’s mountains are just minutes from the hotel, and there’s nothing quote like strolling the historic streets of downtown lined with luxurious boutiques and fine dining restaurants. The Spa at St. Regis Aspen Resort is award-winning, and considered one of the world’s premiere hotel spas. Luxury rooms, suites, and residences are highlighted by features like 400-thread-count Frette linens, spacious marble bathrooms, and custom furnishings by Ralph Lauren. Need something? The St. Regis Butler Service is ready to assist 24 hours a day. Don’t forget to take advantage of the ski valet.

Additionally, The St. Regis is host to Aspen Food and Wine Classic each year. As such, it’s a culinary destination. Don’t miss the Velvet Buck and Mountain Social for dinner.

The Gant

The Gant’s collection of upscale condos is located at the base of Aspen Mountain in a five-acre enclave with easy access to the slopes and historic downtown Aspen. The Gant features 140 individually decorated condos, all with full kitchens, living and dining areas, wood-burning fireplaces, and either a patio or balcony. You can choose from standard, deluxe or premier condos. The Gant’s condos range from one- to four bedrooms, meaning that couples, families, and small groups can all find something they like. Amenities include two heated outdoor pools, three hot tubs, complimentary parking and valet service, complimentary in-town shuttle and Aspen airport transfers, and grocery delivery. Full ski services are available at The Gant, including rentals, boot fitters, and overnight storage.

Annabelle Inn

Annabelle Inn came to life in 1948 as the Christmas Inn, and was renamed in 2005 to the Annabelle Inn. However, don’t let the use of the term “inn” fool you; this isn’t your everyday ski town inn. Annabelle Inn, located on Main Street, has 35 guest rooms, each uniquely decorated with a luxurious feel. A complimentary breakfast is included each morning of your stay, while other perks include stunning views of Aspen Mountain and Red Mountain, ski storage, two outdoor jacuzzis, and the lounge where you can enjoy freshly-baked cookies each night by the fireplace. Just walk outside to catch a free shuttle to any of the four mountains.

Viceroy Snowmass

Snowmass skiers and riders love the ski-in, ski-out Viceroy Hotel, the most luxurious hotel experience at Snowmass. Viceroy’s studio residences, suites and penthouses are all stylish with great views. All rooms have either full or convenience kitchens, though with the Viceroy’s great food options, you’ll want to explore beyond your hotel kitchen. Taste local and international flavors at an eclectic range of on-property restaurants, including the Toro Kitchen and Lounge, Nest Bar & Grill, and Café V. Don’t miss the Viceroy’s sprawling 7,000-square-foot spa, and outdoor pools. Viceroy Snowmass is also dog-friendly.

Limelight Hotel

Limelight Aspen, located on Monarch Street with 126 guest rooms and suites, was recently renovated top to bottom. A mix of “chalet chic” and laid-back comfort come together at the hotel that’s a short walk from Aspen Mountain. Limelight’s lounge is a favorite for its wood-fired pizzas, après-ski specials and musicians from the local live music scene. A breakfast buffet is served daily. Limelight’s rooms and suites vary, but each room is outfitted with stunning views, a wet bar, and modern conveniences. A perk of some of the standard rooms is that they can be contiguous with an adjacent room for families or groups of friends. If you’re flying into and out of Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, the hotel will pick you up and drop you off.

Hotel Durant

Hotel Durant fits more of the homey, boutique category of lodging. So while it’s not what you may picture in a ski resort hotel, you shouldn’t sleep on it, especially considering that it’s more reasonably priced than many of Aspen’s hotels. Hotel Durant’s 19 guest rooms have custom furnishings and modern essentials, and is therefore a great option for those who plan to do a lot of skiing and want a hotel that serves as more of a base. We recommend splurging for one of the balcony rooms with views of the mountains. Guests enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast in the morning and are greeted with freshly baked chocolate chip cookies when returning from a day on the slopes. During the ski season, complimentary après-ski featuring wine and cheese is served daily from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Take advantage of the hot tub and lobby fireplace, too.

The Residence Hotel

Like the Hotel Durant, The Residence Hotel fits more of the boutique category, but on an even smaller scale. The Residence has just seven individually designed suites, yet each one has a stately interior and extraordinary design features, like European antiques and museum-quality artwork that you won’t just find at any resort hotel. For a real splurge, stay in the 1,700-square-foot penthouse suite featuring two lavish bedrooms and bathrooms, Persian carpets, a 200-year-old neo-classical painting that covers the ceiling, and views of Aspen, Smuggler, and Red Mountain. The Residence Hotel is located in the Aspen Block, and within walking distance of restaurant row and the Silver Queen Gondola at the base of Aspen Mountain.

W Aspen

The Marriott-owned W Aspen is located mountainside at Aspen Mountain, making it one of the few alpine getaways of the W chain. W Aspen boasts a state-of-the-art fitness center, while the Wet Deck is what the W refers to as Aspen’s “biggest outdoor scene,” featuring a rooftop pool, hot tub, multiple fire pits, and 360-degree views of the mountains. W Aspen has 88 guest rooms, 4 suites and a couple “wow suites,” all of which offer modern takes on Ute patterns and furniture inspired by the ‘70s pleasure palaces in Aspen. Interiors have the cozy feel of Swiss chalet architecture.

The Aspen Mountain Residences

The Aspen Mountain Residences, as the name presumes, is less of a traditional resort hotel and more of a community of luxury condos, home to more than 50 fractional units. As its website describes it, these are vacation rental residences offering the comforts of home complimented by hotel-like amenities. And the amenities are grand, including an outdoor pool and two outdoor hot tubs, an outdoor fire pit, fitness center, ski valet, equipment rental shop, valet parking, concierge, airport shuttle, in-town shuttle service, and more. All one, two, and three-bedroom residences are fully equipped with full kitchens, living and dining areas, fireplaces, an entertainment system, and either a balcony or patio. The Aspen Mountain Residences are particularly great for families and larger groups, since the larger residences can sleep up to eight.

The Aspen Mountain Residences just completed a lobby remodel, and rooms are being fully remodeled later in 2023.

Aspen Meadows Resort

While many of Aspen’s top hotels are located in the heart of town, Aspen Meadows Resort is more of a secluded retreat. Aspen Meadows Resort is set on 40 stunning acres along the Roaring Fork River in Aspen’s historic west end. Aspen Meadows’ recently renovated guest suites, inspired by classic Bauhaus design and decor, are designed with living, work, and sleeping areas to accommodate every type of traveler. In-suite amenities include pillow-top mattresses, a queen size pull-out sofa sleeper, wet bar, Nespresso coffee makers, and either a private patio or balcony in most guest suites.

Aspen Meadows Resort is described as a Bauhaus-inspired “total work of art,” with incredible outdoor sculptures and beautiful art dotting the grounds. In 2022 it opened the Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies, a 7,000-square-foot museum-grade art exhibition space that preserves the legacy of Herbert Bayer, who designed the property. Finally, don’t miss the seasonal ingredients and locally-inspired dishes served at Plato’s Restaurant, the resort’s stunning restaurant with equally stunning mountain views. Aspen Meadows Resort runs eco-friendly electric shuttle buses to/from Downtown Aspen, as well as to/from the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport.

FAQs

Where do celebrities stay in Aspen?

You can bet that when celebrities are staying in Aspen, they’re often staying at the most luxurious hotels in Aspen. The Little Nell is Aspen’s only 5-star, 5-diamond hotel, and a favorite among those who have the money to spend on a 5-star hotel and experience. The St. Regis Aspen Resort is also a 5-star luxury hotel experience. These are the types of resorts you aren’t just going to find in any ski town. Ultimately, the question of the best resorts in Aspen comes down to preference.

Which is better, Vail or Aspen?

When it comes to America’s best ski resorts, it doesn’t get much better than Vail and Aspen. The question of best ski towns though is always subjective, and deciding between Aspen and Vail is no exception. Generally speaking, there are a lot of similarities. They’re both world-class, luxurious ski destinations, and both receive around 300 inches of snowfall each season. However, Aspen has more mountains, higher elevation, and greater vertical drop. Both Aspen and Vail have incredible hotels, restaurants, and après-ski, so you want be left wanting in either town. Nonetheless, travelers enjoy Vail because of its Bavarian-inspired village. Our recommendation: Spend a few days in both Aspen and Vail to experience each ski destination.

Which Aspen mountain is better?

What makes skiing in Aspen so extraordinary is its four distinct mountains, each with their own characteristics. Aspen Mountain, where it all began, is the classic and most convenient choice. Snowmass is massive, with more than 3,000 acres of skiing and the highest vertical in America. Buttermilk is known for playing host to the Winter X Games and being a great mountain for beginners, while Aspen Highlands is known for the legendary Highland Bowl that draws expert skiers and snowboarders.

What is the best month to visit Aspen?

If you’re a skier and want fresh snow, then December to February is your best bet to visit Aspen. To be on the safe side, we recommend visiting in January or February, when fresh snow is more likely. If you’re traveling on more of a budget, and aren’t after powder days on the ski slopes, then mid-spring and fall are a great time to visit. However, you won’t go wrong visiting Aspen anytime of year.

Increasingly, sustainability is becoming an important factor for travelers. And ski resorts and hotels are catching on. Many hotels in ski towns are making concerted efforts to minimize their impact on the environment. Some hotels have even become LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified. That’s one of your biggest clues that they’ve become proactive about lowering their carbon footprint. LEED is widely recognized as the most important green building standard in the industry. Beyond this certification, there are many other ways that hotels are making their properties more sustainable.

We’ve put together a list of some of the top hotels in popular ski towns that are making sustainability a priority. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it’s a good start for finding a sustainable hotel for your next ski vacation.

Sustainable Ski Town Hotels

The Little Nell, Aspen

The Little Nell, Aspen’s only 5-star, 5-diamond hotel, is a special experience, and that much more because of its sustainability efforts. Sustainability initiatives at The Little Nell have included remodeling efforts using reclaimed materials, recycled and salvaged fixtures and fittings, and donating furniture to Habitat for Humanity. The hotel also focused on using low-VOC paint, water-based stains, and formaldehyde-free glues. The Little Nell estimates the hotel has cut CO2 emissions by 300 tons a year by replacing their boilers. Guests can experience some of The Little Nell’s sustainability efforts firsthand. Their largest suite is powered by a 5,000-watt solar panel system.

Hotel Terra, Jackson Hole

Wyoming’s first LEED silver certified hotel is a a standout for its long list of green initiatives. Hotel Terra earned its LEED silver certification in part because of its efforts to save water and improve energy efficiency. Hotel Terra’s sustainability efforts include things like solar-powered faucets, waterless urinals, refillable aluminum water bottles in all rooms, and elimination of light pollution. 100% of its electric power is offset with the purchase of alternative energy, including wind, solar and hydro sources. The building itself is sustainable, too, with 80% recycled content in the steel used throughout the building, and 100% recycled Eco Shake roof shingles.

The Blake, Taos

We’ve previously written about Taos Ski Valley’s sustainability efforts and recognition. It was the first major ski resort to become a certified B Corp, and last year it was announced that it had become a certified CarbonNeutral company. Taos Ski Valley’s sustainability highlights continue with The Blake, its 80-room alpine guesthouse awarded LEED silver certification. The Blake’s geothermal cooling and heating system, and advanced water efficiency, contribute to Taos Ski Valley’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Guests can take part in The Blake’s sustainability efforts by using the hotel’s water filling stations, which have helped reduce single-use plastic.

The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe

Guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals and The Ritz-Carlton’s 2025 Sustainability and Social Impact Goals, the luxury hotel brand has committed to creating a positive and sustainable impact at all of its hotels. Their principles include investing in the communities they operate in, integrating sustainability across their value chain and mitigating climate-related risks, reducing its environmental impact, and more. The Ritz-Carlton was the first Founding Partner of IMPACT 2030, a collaboration with the United Nations and other global stakeholders, which marshals corporate volunteering action to advance the achievement of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe became the brand’s first LEED certified resort, which it received in 2010. The hotel encourages guest participation, as travelers planning their trip on The Ritz-Carlton website can see both the carbon and water footprint per night of their stay.

Montage Deer Valley

Its sustainability commitments include diversion of over 82 percent of generated construction waste from local landfills, utilization of both regional and recycled materials, implementing energy and water efficient equipment and fixtures, green housekeeping, and sustainable purchasing and landscaping policies. Beyond the Montage Deer Valley, the town of Park City has committed to helping people travel more sustainably. Find out more in our article here.

Sun Valley Lodge, Sun Valley

Sun Valley’s motto is “our environment is our livelihood.” The lodge has become more eco-friendly over the years through ways like replacing older windows with thermally-insulated Low-E windows and installing interior window treatments to prevent heat loss or gain. Sun Valley installed new heating and cooling fan coil units in each guest room, and added an upgraded digital control heating and cooling controls system. Low-activity spaces are equipped with occupancy sensors to decrease the amount of energy when not in use, and low-flow plumbing and fixtures are in guest rooms and public spaces. Sun Valley’s website has a full list and description of all the ways they’ve committed to being more sustainable.

Snowbird Lodge, Snowbird

Snowbird developed a cogeneration plant that uses natural gas to produce electricity while recycling naturally occurring heat waste to warm buildings and facilities. It’s the only ski resort in North America to operate this kind of facility. Snowbird’s cogeneration plant is powering the Cliff Lodge and its 500-plus hotel rooms, 80,000 square feet of meeting space, restaurants, heated swimming pools, hot tubs, and a system of subsurface piping that melts snow and ice on walkways.
