Winter travel is unpredictable at best with surprise storms, unexpected delays, and canceled flights. However, you can beat the ski travel blues by choosing ski resorts close to an airport with direct flights serviced by major airlines into and out of some of North America’s major cities. Pairing the right ski resort with the right airport can limit missed connections, eliminate lengthy white-knuckle drives, and make travel less stressful. Below, see our recommendations for U.S. airports with easy ski resort access, and then check out our North America flight guides here.

Airports With Easy Ski Resort Access

1. Jackson Hole Airport (JAC)

Jackson Hole Airport, located at the base of the Teton Range, is approximately 20 miles from Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and less than 10 miles from the town of Jackson. The airport has nonstop airline service from up to 16 destinations throughout the United States during peak seasons, and is served year-round by Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, and seasonally by Frontier Airlines and Sun Country Airlines.

Bonus: Jackson Hole Airport is the only commercial airport in the United States located inside a national park, conveniently located within Grand Teton National Park. Jackson is arguably one of the most beautiful destinations to fly into.

Most flights to Vail/Eagle are operated by American, connecting numerous airports to EGE. Eagle County’s convenient, high-elevation airport places skiers and riders within a 40-minute drive of Beaver Creek and Vail, and an hour drive to Copper Mountain. In many cases there’s easy shuttle service to your hotel, too.

9. Mammoth Yosemite Airport (MMH) / Bishop Airport (BIH)

Air travel to Mammoth Lakes and Mammoth Mountain, the third most-visited ski resort in the United States, has gotten a whole lot easier. United Airlines now offers daily service to Bishop (BIH) airport from San Francisco (SFO) and Denver (DEN). BIH flights replaced daily United service to Mammoth Yosemite Airport (MMH), making winter air travel to California’s most popular mountain resort more accessible and opening the door for expanded flight routes and access to Mammoth Lakes in the near future. Shuttle and rental car services are both available at Bishop Airport, while there’s also free and regular bus service throughout Mammoth Lakes. It’s about a 45-minute drive from Bishop to Mammoth Lakes.

12. Glacier Park International Airport (FCA)

Many skiers to Montana fly into Bozeman, and for good reason, since it’s the closest airport to Big Sky Resort, the largest ski resort in Montana. But don’t sleep on Whitefish. After grabbing your luggage, you can be on the mountain in 30 minutes when you fly into Glacier Park International Airport. It’s just 15 minutes to the town of Whitefish, and a half-hour from FCA to Whitefish Mountain Resort, which we included in our list of the best uncrowded ski resorts. What’s more, it’s just a 40-minute drive to Glacier National Park. There are few destinations that have the incredible outdoor access and convenience as Whitefish, and Glacier Park International Airport makes it easy to get outdoors in a jiff.

It’s no secret that a ski trip can often take a little bit more planning and preparation. And that’s particularly the case when flying into a destination like Sun Valley that has a smaller airport and is prone to winter weather. We recommend booking your flights as far in advance as possible. Those weekend flights in and out of Sun Valley fill up quickly, and especially on holiday weekends. If you plan on using the Sun Valley Express,

Finally, no matter where you’re flying in and out of, we recommend giving yourself some extra time. Winter weather, traffic, and the time to check ski gear and get through security can all be unpredictable. For one less thing to think about, consider shipping your skis or snowboard.

Burlington Flight Guide

>About Burlington

The most populous city in Vermont, Burlington is located 45 miles south of the Canadian border right on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain. The city’s main strip, Church Street, which is a popular shopping and dining destination, is framed with picturesque views of Lake Champlain and the distant rolling hills. Burlington is a gateway to some of the best that Vermont has to offer.

Burlington is home to Vermont’s largest airport, Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport, located in neighboring South Burlington. Roughly 25 ski resorts are less than a 3-hour drive from Burlington International Airport. Bolton Valley is only 35 minutes away, while Stowe, Smugglers’ Notch, Mad River Glen, and Sugarbush are all approximately one hour away. These mountains are perfect for day trips or shorter stays in Vermont. Whiteface, Jay Peak, Killington, Pico, Burke Mountain, Saskadena Six, Dartmouth Skiway, and Whaleback are all under 2 hours. For those who don’t mind the longer drive, Titus Mountain, Gore Mountain, Okemo, Cannon Mountain, Loon Mountain, and Bromley are all excellent options.

Get to Know Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport (BTV)

Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport is one of the best bets for skiers and riders traveling to New England ski resorts because of its convenience to so many great ski areas. While it’s an international airport, it has much more of a small airport feel. Recently, it made USA Today’s list of the Top Ten Best Small Airports in the U.S., ranking eighth. BTV has 1 main terminal with 15 gates.

You’ll most likely need to rent a car to get from Burlington International Airport to the region’s ski resorts. BTV’s rental car center is located inside the terminal on the main floor next to baggage claim. Outside on the ground floor is the rideshare area, another easy option for getting to closer resorts. There are also several shuttle buses you can utilize. The Killington Express Shuttle offers direct service from BTV to Killington, Pico, Stratton, Bromley, Mount Snow, Sugarbush, and more.

Need to Know Information

If you’re renting a car, it’s important that you check the weather and traffic conditions before departing the airport, and have an alternate route saved in your GPS in case of unexpected closures or bad weather. The New England region can often have weather patterns that affect driving and road options. For example, if you’re headed to Smugglers’ Notch, the pass on Route 108 between Stowe and Jeffersonville closes for the winter from mid-October to mid-May. It’s recommended to set your GPS to 4323 Vermont Route 108 South to avoid this closure.

As you’re planning and packing for your ski trip, consider how you’ll be traveling with your ski gear. Many airlines, including United, JetBlue, Delta, and American (all of which fly out of BVT), count a ski bag and boot bag as 1 checked item so long as they weigh under 50 lbs. combined.  For one less thing to think about, consider shipping your skis or snowboard.

Finally, no matter where you’re flying, we recommend giving yourself some extra time. Winter weather, traffic, and the time to check ski gear and get through security can all be unpredictable.

It’s no secret that Salt Lake City is one of the best ski destinations in the world. After all it’s home to The Greatest Snow on Earth®, as Utah averages an incredible 500 inches of snow annually. However, Utah powder days, snowstorms, and holiday weekends can bring with them road closures, backed up traffic, and long lift lines. In the time it would take to actually get on the mountain from Salt Lake City, you’d be better off flying into Aspen or Sun Valley. It’s a no-brainer to avoid the bottleneck of Cottonwood Canyons.

Whether you want to avoid traffic, or just need a change of skiing scenery, we’ve got you covered in our flight guide of non-stop flights to ski resorts from Salt Lake City.

See more of our North America flight guides here.

Salt Lake City Flight Guide

>Get To Know Salt Lake City International Airport

Utah skiing is hailed for a number of reasons, including the convenience and access to many ski resorts from Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). However, it’s also incredibly convenient to fly from SLC to other ski destinations. Salt Lake City International Airport is just a few miles from downtown Salt Lake City, and thanks to the TRAX light rail, it’s just a 10- to 20-minute ride to SLC from a number of neighborhods. This makes SLC one of the most convenient and accessible international airport in North America, especially for skiers.

More than 300 flights depart daily from SLC to 90 nonstop destinations. Salt Lake City International Airport is a hub for Delta, which accounts for about 70% of total traffic. Want to ski at Brian Head but don’t feel like driving? Skip the drive and fly on Delta to Cedar City Regional Airport. It’s an hour flight and then just 30 miles to Brian Head. Other domestic airlines that fly out of Salt Lake City International Airport include Alaska, American, Frontier, Southwest, and United.

Need to Know Information

It’s no secret that a ski trip can often take a little bit more planning and preparation. And that’s particularly the case when flying into a smaller destination or regional airport, like many of the flights listed above. As such, we recommend booking your flights as far in advance as possible. In some cases, ski destinations may only have one flight per day, with those weekend flights filling up months in advance.

Additionally, ground transportation and rideshare in ski towns may not have the accessibility and availability as major cities. One of the perks of flying in and out of Salt Lake City, however, is that there’s such great transportation options. Utah Transit Authority’s TRAX Green Line takes travelers straight to the airport, dropping passengers off on the ground level outside the terminal. Lyft and Uber both operate at SLC, while Yellow Cab is the airport’s only on-demand taxi cab provider.

Finally, no matter where you’re flying in and out of, we recommend giving yourself some extra time. Winter weather, traffic, and the time to check ski gear and get through security can all be unpredictable. For one less thing to think about, consider shipping your skis or snowboard.

Telluride Flight Guide

>About Telluride

Stunning beauty and incredible history collide in Telluride, designated a National Historic Landmark District. Telluride’s charming Victorian architecture and well-preserved streets take visitors back to the late 19th century, capturing the essence of its mining heritage. The town itself is entirely walkable, while access to the Gondola helps bridge the gap between the resort and local culture. Mountain Village is a modern resort community featuring upscale hotels, shops, and restaurants, providing a luxurious complement to the historic charm of Telluride.

Telluride Ski Resort is recognized internationally for its terrain. It on average receives more than 300 inches of snow per season, and boasts 300 days of sunshine. While there’s so much standout terrain, Revelation Bowl, which opened in 2008, is considered some of its most legendary terrain. Telluride Ski Resort’s combination of views and terrain is truly unparalleled.

Get to Know Telluride Regional Airport (TEX) and Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ)

Getting to Telluride is easier than you think. In the winter, 11 major hubs have direct flights to Telluride Regional Airport (TEX) and the neighboring Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ). Once you touch down at Telluride Regional Airport (TEX), it’s just 10 minutes to Telluride and Mountain Village. One of the highest commercial airports in the United States, Telluride Regional Airport sits at an elevation of 9,078 feet (2,767 meters). The airport’s location amidst the mountains provides passengers with stunning aerial views during takeoff and landing.

Montrose, on the other hand, is a scenic 65-mile drive away. Given the legendary landscape of the area, the views make the extra drive worth it, especially if you’re unable to fly into Telluride Regional Airport. From December to March/April, you’ve got direct flights to Montrose (MTJ) from major hubs like Atlanta (ATL), Chicago (ORD), Denver (DEN), Dallas (DFW and DAL), Houston (IAH), and New York.

Several transportation companies provide service from Telluride to Montrose. Although rental cars are available at both airports, it’s not necessary considering the walkability of Telluride and its unique and free public transportation system—the Telluride/Mountain Village Gondola. This system connects the town of Telluride with the Mountain Village and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

Need to Know Information

It’s no secret that a ski trip can often take a little bit more planning and preparation. And that’s particularly the case when flying into a destination like Telluride that has a smaller airport and is prone to winter weather. We recommend booking your flights as far in advance as possible. Those weekend flights in and out of Telluride fill up quickly, and especially on holiday weekends.

Finally, no matter where you’re flying in and out of, we recommend giving yourself some extra time. Winter weather, traffic, and the time to check ski gear and get through security can all be unpredictable. For one less thing to think about, consider shipping your skis or snowboard.

Nestled against the breathtaking backdrop of the Teton Range, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is a heaven for winter enthusiasts seeking the perfect blend of pristine slopes, rustic charm, and unrivaled natural beauty. But unlike many U.S. ski destinations, which are near a major thoroughfare or major city, Jackson is hundreds of miles from a major metro or international airport. And that’s in part what makes Jackson such a special place.

Flying in and out of Jackson Hole is one of the most unique and beautiful window seat experiences in America, as planes takeoff and land just below the towering peaks of the Grand Tetons at Jackson Hole Airport (JAC). From Jackson Hole Airport, it’s then just 15 minutes to Jackson Hole, where Snow King Mountain is located, or 30 minutes to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Grand Targhee is just over an hour away. Aspen Flight Guide

>About Aspen

Aspen is located in west-central Colorado, surrounded by the Elk Mountains’ peaks. Aspen’s four extraordinary mountains—Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass—make it one of the most coveted ski destinations in the world. Located southwest of Denver, Aspen is a three to four-hour drive from Denver, depending on the season and traffic.

During the ski season, travelers should plan for at least four hours, however, and often longer depending on weather and traffic. If you’re flying into Denver, that can make for a full day of travel from many North America cities. By flying directly into Aspen, travelers can be to world-class slopes just minutes after landing.

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) is located just three miles from downtown Aspen and six miles from Snowmass Village, making it a no-brainer to fly into Aspen. Once you’ve flown into Aspen, you don’t even need a car thanks to the Silver Queen Gondola in downtown Aspen and a plethora of shuttles and transportation options. Skiers and snowboarders have easy access to 5,300 acres of terrain spread across 4 world-class resorts. In addition to world-class ski resorts, Aspen is home to world-class hotels. Check out our picks of the top Aspen hotels.

Get to Know Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE)

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is one of the closest airports you’ll find to ski resorts, located just minutes away from Aspen’s four mountains. Travelers could take the first non-stop flight of the day and be on the slopes by lunchtime. What’s more, many Aspen hotels offer complimentary airport pick-up and drop-off.

If you’re renting a car, the rental car counters are located in the Baggage Claim/Arrivals area of the terminal. Bus service from the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) into Aspen and Snowmass is provided for free. There are also taxis and rideshare services that pick up outside of Baggage Claim.

Chicago Flight Guide

>Get to Know Chicago Airports

Chicago is home to two international airports, Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), one of the busiest airports in America, and Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW). The Blue Line L train takes travelers to O’Hare, while the Orange Line L train takes travelers to Midway. However, it can often be much quicker to take a cab or rideshare, especially to O’Hare, since it’s nearly 20 miles from downtown Chicago. Midway is much closer to downtown Chicago, located 11 miles away, making it more convenient for many people.

Chicago O’Hare has several hundred flights daily, the majority of those on United. Alyeska, Aspen, Bozeman, Jackson, and Lake Tahoe are just a few of the ski destinations that United flies to. Many of the other major carriers, including American, have flights out of Chicago to ski destinations, too. Southwest is the airline that most skiers will fly on out of Midway, since Southwest flies to a few ski destinations, including Colorado.

Know Before You Go

It’s no secret that a ski trip can often take a little bit more planning and preparation. And that’s particularly the case when flying into a smaller destination or regional airport, like many of the flights listed above. As such, we recommend booking your flights as far in advance as possible. In some cases, ski destinations may only have one flight per day, with those weekend flights filling up months in advance.

Additionally, ground transportation and rideshare in ski towns may not have the accessibility and availability as major cities. As we mentioned above, there’s a variety of transportation options to and from Chicago’s airports. Cabs and rideshare operate out of both airports, while both airports are also served by shuttles and regional buses. While it’s always recommended to give plenty of time to arrive at the airport, this is especially the case in a major city like Chicago, where traffic can be unpredictable.

Finally, no matter where you’re flying in and out of, we recommend giving yourself some extra time. Winter weather, traffic, and the time to check ski gear and get through security can all be unpredictable. For one less thing to think about, consider shipping your skis or snowboard.

Lake Tahoe is the obvious ski destination choice for skiers and snowboarders who live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Lake Tahoe is home to 13 ski areas, making it the highest concentration of ski areas in America. However, in the time it’d take to drive to Lake Tahoe you could fly into Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) and be skiing in half the time.

Similarly, you could fly from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) into Bishop Airport (BIH), and be skiing at Mammoth Mountain just a couple hours after taking off. This is a no-brainer, especially on a weekend powder day, when you could be stuck in traffic driving to Lake Tahoe for hours. Below, explore our San Francisco flight guide, which explores all the different ski destinations you can fly to from the San Francisco Bay Area.

San Francisco Flight Guide

>Get To Know San Francisco Bay Area Airports

The San Francisco Bay Area has a plethora of non-stop flights into some of the best ski destinations in America. What’s more, the advantage of living in the Bay Area is that you have access to so many different airports. More airports mean more non-stop flight options.

Skip SFO if you live in the East Bay or North Bay, and fly out of Oakland International Airport (OAK) or even Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa. Fly out of Oakland International Airport (OAK) and you’ll be to Salt Lake City in less than two hours. From Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) you can be skiing in an hour at any one of nine world-class ski resorts. From STS in Santa Rosa you can fly on Avelo to Bend, Oregon, and be skiing at one of America’s largest ski resorts, Mt. Bachelor, in just a couple hours.

For South Bay residents, there’s San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) in San Jose, which serves one million passengers per month. From San José Mineta International Airport it’s just an hour to Reno-Tahoe International Airport, and just a couple hours to larger cities that serve as ski gateways, such as Denver and Salt Lake City.

Additionally, you may want to consider Sacramento International Airport (SMF) and Monterey Regional Airport (MRY).

Seattle is a gateway to many Pacific Northwest ski resorts. Further afield are Crystal Mountain, Washington’s largest ski resort, and Mt. Baker. Seattle Flight Guide

>Get to Know Seattle-Tacoma International Airport

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), affectionately known as Sea-Tac, located south of Downtown Seattle, is convenient for flying direct to a number of ski destinations across both the U.S. and Canada. From Seattle-Tacoma International Airport you can be to any number of ski destinations in as little as a couple hours. So in the time that it would take to drive to one of Washington’s ski resorts, you could be skiing in a number of world-class ski destinations. Lake Tahoe, Bozeman, Jackson, and Sun Valley are just a few of the destinations that have non-stop flights from Seattle. Further afield are some other great ski destinations that are a non-stop flight away from Seattle, including Steamboat, Alyeska, and more.

Seattle’s Link Light Rail makes it easy to get to the airport with its SeaTac/Airport station. Travelers can park, or get dropped off at a light rail station, and then be to the airport in 20-45 minutes. The drive to the airport from downtown can be as quick as 15-20 minutes, though it can take up to an hour during rush-hour traffic.

More than 30 airlines serve more than 31 non-stop domestic and nearly 30 international destinations from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Flying in and out of Seattle is particularly advantageous for Alaska Airlines travelers, since Sea-Tac is Alaska’s primary hub. Also of note is that WestJet, Canada’s second-largest airline, has numerous direct flights out of Seattle to ski destinations.

Additionally, there may not be the ground transportation and rideshare accessibility and availability in these ski destinations as major cities. One of the perks of flying in and out of Seattle, however, is that there’s such great transportation options. As we mentioned above, the Link Light Rail has a station at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, making it easy to get to the airport from Capitol Hill, Downtown Seattle, Chinatown, SoDo, and a number of other Seattle neighborhoods. It’s a 38-minute ride from Downtown Seattle to Sea-Tac. The closest Amtrak station is about 5 miles away at Tukwila. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is also served by several Sound Transit and King County Metro buses.
